Fill the gap: the right word in its context
A sentence with a hole and the word that belongs in it. Trains usage, not just meaning.
Knowing what a word means is not enough to use it. You need to know what it appears with, which preposition it takes and where it sits. A gap in a real sentence asks exactly that.
How to play
- An example sentence appears with a gap.
- You type or pick the missing word.
- You check and see the complete sentence.
What it trains
Usage in context. It is the step between recognising an isolated word and writing your own text: the sentence gives you the scaffolding and you supply the missing piece.
It also exposes collocations, which is where correct texts still sound odd: the word is right, but not the one a native speaker would have put there. All the games
FAQ
- Where do the sentences come from?
- From the example sentences in that word’s dictionary entry, ordered by level, so they are real usage rather than sentences built for the exercise.
- Does it help with a writing exam?
- Yes, it is among the closest: it practises production inside a structure, which is what a writing task asks for.
